People are hungry. Right here in Vancouver. What can we do about it?
This wiki was created to explore ways to address the problem of hunger in our community and to encourage everyone to submit ideas, research, and news. I've created several folders and added content, but this is just a start. I hope, with your involvement, we can build a knowledge base. Many of the links presented are not specifically about Washington programs, but represent what other American communities are doing to address hunger. Your contributions are appreciated. Please feel free to add links, comments, resources, regardless of your location.
I created http://www.firstthebasics.com over a year ago to help people easily find food providers hours and locations. (this information is often hard to find based on a web search, and the agencies who actually distribute food often do not have resources for posting their information to the web). The site serves a specific purpose, but does not address important issues like: how the current economic crisis effects food pantries, where to donate food, and how to advocate against hunger. One lesson I've learned: the problems of providing enough food for our neighbors and letting them know when are where that food is available are intimately connected . . .
so that's where you come in
If you work with people in need
If you understand government food programs
If you run a food bank
If you use food bank services
If you are interested in helping to address the problem of hunger
you probably have information and ideas about how we could improve the process of getting more food directly to food providers - and theefore directly to people in need. Please consider posting to this wiki to share your experience and resources.
